A hush fell over the entire bus.
Pang Yang hadn’t quite discerned what had transpired earlier, but it was clear that the one called Gu Xinghua had offended this side.
In his mind, Pang Yang couldn’t help but scold Gu Xinghua:
How dare you?
Didn’t you know this family of three was well-connected, acquainted with the formidable driver of this bus? It was evident just now that they had some connection with the one driving at the front.
Did you have anything to compete against them?
Gu Xinghua’s head was violently struck by the terrifying skull, almost eliciting a cry from him.
Bewildered, he never expected that the little girl would hit him right in front of the corpses!
He dared not speak out, not only refraining from speaking but also consciously minimizing his presence, fearing to draw the attention of the corpses.
The little girl’s bloodshot eyes stared at him.
Mom said, don’t kill, but don’t endure injustice either.
This person repeatedly provoked them, truly making her angry, so it was okay to hit him.
The man no longer dared to lift his head. The little girl blinked her big, innocent eyes, looking adorable. She took the old man’s hand and sweetly said, “Grandpa, my...brother made two roasted sweet potatoes for you. Did you see them in your basket?”
...
She led the old man back to his bunk. He sat on the edge, pulling out a vegetable basket from underneath the bunk.
The dead rooster was still on it, its blood already dried up, the twisted head lying to the side. The basket was covered in a dark red hue, eerie and terrifying in the dim light.
Pang Yang, the one who killed the rooster, quietly shrunk into his blanket.
Ning Su had been watching the situation all along.
The old man, who had only stomped his feet last night, could now speak, but his facial expression was still very stiff, the rigidity of a corpse that had been dead for a long time, almost incapable of making any expressions.
Unexplainably, Ning Su saw a kind of sadness on his face.
Especially when he looked at the dead rooster.
He looked for a while, then reached out to touch the two roasted sweet potatoes.
The sweet potatoes had cooled down, but they were still soft.
The old man raised his head and looked at Ning Su, saying, “Thank you, young man.”
Ning Su uttered a soft “Hmm,” sitting up and saying, “No need to thank me, keep it for yourself.”
Several players were a bit surprised and bewildered.
They hadn’t expected the undead to be so humane.
They couldn’t quite fathom Ning Su’s approach.
While they were doing their best to avoid the undead, keeping out of their notice, he was trying to appease them?
After this unexpected turn of events, the atmosphere on the bus lightened considerably.
Fang Qi also took advantage of the situation to ease the tension.
The “person” laying beside him, called his name twice, but Fang Qi didn’t respond.
He seemed to have given up. Just when Fang Qi was about to breathe a sigh of relief, the person’s head suddenly dropped beside his pillow.
The hand beneath the blanket clenched suddenly, and Fang Qi nearly let out a cry.
His eyes hadn’t completely shut, leaving a narrow gap, and they met the mouth on top of the head.
The protruding teeth parted, revealing blood-stained gaps, emitting a chilling coldness.
He seemed to be scrutinizing him in this way.
After the head dropped, the body followed suit, and the neck and head merged.
In this cramped bunk, their bodies pressed against each other, foreheads touching.
The scorching heat from above left no room for evasion.
Despair surged within Fang Qi, and he reluctantly closed his eyes.
“Fang Qi,” he called him and chuckled.
At this point, responding or not seemed meaningless.
Trapped in despair, Fang Qi didn’t even want to open his mouth.
He felt the person move, as if lifting his head.
Fang Qi also raised his head in this position. He knew that lifting his head would allow him to see the player named Ling Xiao on the other bunk.
Ever since this player came on board, there had been no sound from him. When Fang Qi looked up earlier, he felt an eerie sensation.
It was as if he had truly died.
The surrounding air stood still, darker than elsewhere.
“Fang Qi,” the “person” called him again.
Fang Qi had no intention of responding.
The “person” got up, staring at him.
Just as Fang Qi felt despair, reluctance, and intense nervousness all at once, the figure unexpectedly left.
Fang Qi opened his eyes in shock.
Hadn’t he already touched his forehead? How did he not realize that he was different?
His body went limp, and he should have noticed that he was drenched in cold sweat.
Other players took notice as the “person” left Fang Qi’s bunk.
Ning Su lay back in his bunk, covered himself with a small blanket, and peacefully drifted off to sleep.
Pang Yang wiped the sweat off his forehead and settled in.
Other players had varying thoughts, but there was a collective sigh of relief.
The atmosphere in the bus, once as tense as a drawn bowstring, relaxed considerably.
The cacophony persisted, with some corpses muttering and others shifting around.
At times like these, it was best for players to move a bit. Staying rigid for too long would be unusual.
At the rear were four male players. In the left-middle position, Xue Wei and Gu Xinghua were there.
A bit forward on the right-middle side, two female players occupied bunks separated by one.
Short-haired girl Ji Xuejun cautiously sat up, holding her blanket as she surveyed the surroundings.
Hearing some commotion, she saw another female player approaching and sitting on her bunk.
“Ji Xuejun,” she said.
Ji Xuejun nodded, remembering that this player was called “Bao Yu.” During the parking incident, the human pupa master asked them to register, and she paid attention.
Guessing that Bao Yu felt the same way, wanting to break the stiffness, Ji Xuejun initiated interaction.
“You’re Bao Yu, right?” Ji Xuejun asked.
Bao Yu remained silent for a moment and then nodded.
After that, she fell silent. After a while, she whispered again, “Ji Xuejun.”
Ji Xuejun felt a bit puzzled and looked at Bao Yu.
When they were outside the bus, Bao Yu had her hair tied in a ponytail. Whether it was due to just lying down or for some other reason, her hair was now scattered, partially covering her face.
From Ji Xuejun’s side angle, she couldn’t discern Bao Yu’s expression.
“Did what just happened scare you?” Ji Xuejun moved a bit closer.
She saw Bao Yu’s hand on the bunk, trembling faintly.
It seemed her guess was right; Bao Yu was genuinely afraid.
Ji Xuejun moved next to her and gently patted her trembling hand. “Don’t be afraid. Look, Fang Qi just hid away.”
She patted her hand, and suddenly, Ji Xuejun shivered. “Your, your hand is so cold?”
Bao Yu’s cold hand turned and held hers.
Bao Yu slowly turned to look at her, and a cold, rigid face slowly revealed a smile.
Ji Xuejun seemed to understand. Her mind went blank, and she unconsciously breathed heavily.
She thought of Zhao Kehan hanging from a tree, the sound of blood “whooshing” down.
She remembered telling the human pupa master that it wasn’t safe to gather like this, planning to go back to her original bus.
But the human pupa master had everyone sign up their names, and a few players did. She diligently recorded the names and faces of each player, thinking that would keep her safe.
She didn’t want to offend the human pupa master, so she followed along.
She would have never thought...
The two girls sat close, holding hands, looking very intimate.
A few players glanced over hurriedly, thinking nothing of it.
No one knew what happened between them.
Until, suddenly, the bus came to a stop ten minutes later.
